Symposium

26th, 27th & 28th September 7.30pm £8.50/6.50

Fresh from the Camden Fringe 2024: Symposium!

by performance troupê — the JINX. Winners of SPF GOLD Award (2024).

Symposium launches the bizarre pop-art coloured world of four characters in a boat made of paper: an eccentric aunt, two washed-up showgirls and their father, Kurt Cobain.

Who together, play a splutteringly ridiculous magnetic life-sized game of hangman in real time. The winner picks who ‘literally’ has a body part removed. The end goal being, to win the game and keep your head. The nine rounds of games lead to recycled popular culture quotations….and increasingly sadistic consequences.

Symposium explores the comedic interplay between people and cultural excess. Mashing together the surreal remanence of popular culture’s digital footprint. Using these fragments, (PDF film scripts, Spotify sound bites and YouTube visual documentation) as disconnected parts to stick together.

From Bed Knobs and Broomsticks (1971), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) to British TV Series to Skins (2007) we tease our audience through dance sequences, texts, and direct copies. Presenting cultural cannibalism, not just of the physical body but of the wider ‘body politic’ that is consumed in contemporary culture. To counter the contemporary obsession with ‘new stuff’ – finding a ‘new’ physicalised language from the digital landscape of the past.

Symposium continuously reinvents the futile truth of meaning in what we call loopy narrative performance-art theatre.
