‘Cocktail Hour’ and ‘Smokers at the Scene of a Crime’ are the exciting new set of two-handers from Julia Armfield. Powerful in their simplicity and drawing on her abilities as an excellent conversationalist writer, Armfield has produced two engaging and emotional pieces that are sure to capture the imagination of audience.
‘Cocktail Hour’ sees Miles and Aggie segue through conversations starting with chewing gum and finishing with more intimate family histories, all in order to avoid the tedium of a family party. However, the real reason is not avoiding unwanted family – Aggie has a more sinister reason to not take the long walk downstairs to the party below.
‘Smokers at the Scene of a Crime’ starts at 3.a.m outside a Metropolitan Hotel. Martha and Ben start an amicable conversation that quickly moves into a more aggressive and confrontational argument.
